RATE CUT LIKELY

Analysts are predicting that the Federal Reserve will cut key interest rates when it meets Jan. 29-30.

Such a rate cut — while not directly tied to mortgage rates — does predict their levels. A key rate cut generally means mortgage rates will decline.

Recently released employment numbers “are clear evidence that the economy is beginning to slow,” says John Canavan, market analyst at Stone & McCarthy, “and that the housing weakness and credit-market woes are starting to take a bite. At this point, there’s no question that the Fed will have to ease again.”

The question is how much of a cut. Some observers say a half percentage point is likely to help offset the negative fallout from the subprime mortgage market and weaker job growth.

Other analysts say consumer spending is high and exports are rising. They predict a quarter percentage point decrease.

IPHONE HOME SEARCHES

REALTOR.com has launched a special URL for users of Apple’s iPhone to allow them to access home listings and sales associate contact information easily.

Joe De Tuno, senior vice president of product management for Realtor.com, states, “Our new search capabilities for the iPhone are relevant enhancements that give consumers the full power of mobility and immediate access to REALTOR.com in a manner that fits naturally into their everyday lifestyle.”

The site is capitalizing on the iPhone’s popularity, with an estimated 45 million of the devices expected to be in use by 2009. Cell phones and PDAs equipped with Windows Mobile 5.0 also can search Realtor.com.

Boulder Realtors will provide services at a discount as part of the city’s new affordable housing initiative.

A coalition of agents from the Boulder Realtor Association will offer their professional assistance at a commission rate of no higher than 2.5 percent to lower-income citizens when purchasing or selling permanently affordable housing in the city. Agents will receive instruction to orient them to Boulders affordable housing initiative. Boulder officials further explained these same agents will donate a good deal of time and services to the city.
